Essay Advice from the Experts

2. With a partner, go back to the site from last class. Choose a different essay to read, and this time, make note of three things you learned about the writer.  Report out.

3. Now, we are meeting again in groups to consider and evaluate advice about how to write a good college essay. Choose one of the following articles and answer the three questions below in your group. Type your answers in a response to today's post on our class blog.




  1. What are the top three pieces of advice you glean from this piece?
  2. From whose perspective does this advice come?
  3. Do you find this advice compelling? Why or why not?
HW: Use the advice given in these articles to write the first draft of your college essay. Try writing on one of the free writing prompts we did last week....build off of one that you already did, or feel free to start over. We will be working with these drafts next class.

  1. Some advice we have taken from this piece is to sound interesting to think about the question being asked, and lastly would be practicing writing your essay.
    This advice is from teachers to students.
    Yes, because it lets you know what they are looking for and what you should write about.

    1. You need to believe in what you write, you don't always have to write about something tragic, don't try to be someone else
    2. Deans and admissions officers, as well as people who have gone to college and had trouble writing their own essays.
    3. Yes, this advice was compelling because it was from people with first-hand experience and we could relate to it.

    Don't write about something that they could learn about in your resume


    Don't too controversial

    Focus on one aspect of yourself

    Tell a good story

    An admissions dean

    3. Do you find this advice compelling? Why or why not?

    Not really, we have learned most of it already in class but it was very good advice.
